LocationYou should consider where a service provider is located, should you need to contact them for technical support. It is preferable to use an ISP that has a local phone number you can use, rather than a long distance one. It might be better to use a local service provider instead of a national one because of convenience and speed. However the national service providers usually have more assets and resources. Therefore they maybe
better able to provide you with better, more reliable service. You should find out if an ISP has a local point of presence(POP)in your area. A POP is a server with serval modems which acts as a gateway to the Internet. If you are not located in one of the ISPs local service area, you might have to use an 800 number. In some instances the 800 charges are per hour only and are often considered expensive. It may be less expensive to sign on with a company that charges more service fees per month, you must estimte how much time you will spend on the Internet per month to figure out which would be more cost effective for you Learn more about Netscape's unlimited Internet access and email. Seperate phone numbers:Some ISPs provide different telephone numbers for users with different modem speed. This could be benefical to users with high speed modems Charging for connect speed: Because some ISPs offer users the option to connect
at various modem speeds, they sometimes charge customers additional fees for connecting with higher speed modems. Some ISPs may charge you per minute or per month to connect with a high speed modem. Others charge a flat fee .Cant get DSL? Get near DSL speed with your existing dialup service.

ISP ConnectionData transfer speed is probably as important to a user as cost. There are many factors that affects data speed. Modem speed is crucial factor in data transfer speed. The more user added to a network the greater the work load on the servers. If your ISP do not upgrade often enough your network connection may slow down considerably. Another important factor is the ISPs proximity to the backbone of the Internet. The routing of information from network to network affects the speed of service, as does the number of users accessing the network. Some service providers built their own backbone. ContractsSome ISP might ask you to sign a contract for a predertimined amount of time . You need to make sure you are clear about the terms of the contract before you sign on to any particular service. You Might also ask these contract questions. Will you have to sign on to the service for a year or two to receive the advertized rate?. What happen if you discontinue your service before the allotted time is used?. Will the ISP prorate previously paid charges at a higher rate if you decide to cancel service before the contract is finish?. Will you be charged a fee for breaking the service contract?. What action can you take if the ISP cannot sustain the quality of service as promised?.PeoplePC Online - more access numbers than AOL
Available ApplicationsNot all ISPs give you full use of all Internet applications. Some services make you pay additional fees for services like usenet or IRC. Some ISPs will allow you to put up your own web page on their server, usually up to a designated size. Check to see if this is included with your account or is an additional charge or the size limit of your own web page.Frequently, ISPs will give you Internet software tools bundled in one package. If you would like to use other applictions you need to check if these can be used in addition to the ISPs software package. This means the ISPs package should be winsock-compliant in order to run other application that support winsock.Need traffic? Getting ConnectedSetting up a computer for a dial-up Internet connection used to be a cumbersome task forcing users to find, install, and configure the necessary software themself. Fortunately, Windows 95 simplifies this process,as it includes the dial-up Networking and TCP/IP software necessary to get on the Internet. It even comes with some basic application such as Telnet and FTP. Your ISP will help you with the specifies of configur-ing your PC properly. Lets cover some of the basics here.Setting up the HardwareThe first thing you need to do is to make sure you have the necessary hardware for a dial-up connection. The two basic components you will need are a computer and a modem. Lets say you have a PC-compatable computer running Windows 95. If you dont have a modem you will need to purchase one.
Pick at least a 14.4Kbps model, 28.8Kbsp or 56Kbsp.Preferable a 28.8 or 56Kbsp remember your modem speed is likely to be the biggest performance bottleneck in your Internet connection,so get the fastest one you can afford. Once you have installed a modem, make sure it is properly configured in the modems Control Panel.Refer to your modem's documentation and the windows 95 help system.Installing The SoftwareNow you will have to install and configure the necessary Windows 95 software. Your ISP might may use their own TCP/IP software rather than the software that comes with windows 95. In that case follow the instruction they provide you. The following is a few steps of what might be necessary to setup your computer for a dial-up connection.Open the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel and switch to the Windows Setup Tab. In the box of Windows Components, click on the communications entry. then click on details button to open to open the communications window. Click on the box next to the dial-up Networking place a check mark next to it then click ok to close the communications window. Now click ok again to begin installing the Dial-up Networking software. Windows 95 will prompt you to insert some of your Windows 95 disk, so it can load the necessary disk from them. After you have finish installing the Dial-up Networking software, open the Network icon in the Control Panel. You should now see "Dial-up Adapter" listed in the box of installed components. If you do not click on the add button to open the Select Network Components type Window. Double-click on Adapter to open the Select Network Adapters Window. This window is divided into two sections: a list of manufacturers on the left and a list of their products which are supported by windows 95 onthe right. Scroll down the list click on Microsof. You should see "Dial-up Adapter" listed on the right; double-click on it. Winows 95 will now configure your computer and add "Dial-up Adapter" to the list of network components. Once Dial-up Adapter is listed, you must now installed the TCP/IP software if it is not already there. Click on the Add button to open the Select Network Component Type window. Double-click on Protocol to open the select Network Protocol window. Click on Microsoft, then double click on TCP/IP, which should appear on the right. Windows 95 will now install the TCP/IP software, as well as its network applications Telnet and FTP. After you have installed the Dial-up Networking and TCP/IP software, you will have to configure them to connect to your ISP. Hopefully your ISp has provided you with installation software which will configure windows 95 for you automatically. If not speak with your ISPs technical support.

Dialing UpOnce the necessary software and hardware has been installed and properly configured, all that remains is to dial up your ISP to make connection. This is what should usually happen; Your computer will dial the number for your ISP's POP, using your modem. Your modem connects to one of the POPs modems. This is usually accompanied by a lot of high pitched squealing noises from your modem. those noises are the two modems talking to each other. The PoP server ask for your username and password. you type this info yourself or the computer handles it for you depending and how your configuration. After confirming your username and password, the POP server assigns your computer an IP address and connects it to the networkVisit Recommended Links Below
